Energy cost burden follows downward trend

- German industry relieved by more than one tenth in one year
- Energy bill marks new low in December
- Drop of 19 percent for highly energy intensive industries

Despite a slight increase in fuel prices, the burden of energy costs for the German industry has reached a new low in December 2016. Compared to December 2015 the energy cost index (EKI) fell by 11.1 percent. This is the lowest level since calculations began in early 2010. This is the result of the most recent evaluation of the index by the Öko-Institut and the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin) on behalf of the European Climate Foundation (ECF).

An executive summary and the full report in German of the annual review for 2016 can be found here.

Energy Transparency is an initiative by the European Climate Foundation in cooperation with the Observatoire Français des Conjonctures Economiques (OFCE) in France, the Öko-Institut and the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin) in Germany, and WiseEuropa in Poland.
