9th International Foundrymen Conference entitled Innovative Materials and Advanced Concepts of Metal Casting Production was held in Opatija from 18th till 19th June, 2009.
The Conference was organized by Faculty of Metallurgy from Sisak – University of Zagreb, in cooperation with Metal Industry Varaždin Ltd, Varaždin, Croatia, Rio Tinto Iron & Titanium GmbH, Eschborn, Germany, Pro Ferrum, Rijeka, Croatia and Elkem AS, Norway and under the high auspices of University of Zagreb, Ministry of Science, Education and Sports of Republic of Croatia, Academy of Technical Sciences of Republic of Croatia, Mittel Europäische Giesserei Initiative (MEGI), Chamber of Commerce of Croatia, Sisak-Moslavina County and City of Sisak. The aim of the Conference was to present the results of investigations, new scientific and technical accomplishments and the rise of technical and economical competition of foundry industry through rationalization and optimization of metal casting production. The market requirements for increase of quality and characteristics of cast products lied on implementation of new knowledge, advanced concepts and metal casting production.

180 participants from 16 countries were present at the Conference (Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Czech Republic, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, Italy, Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Rumania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden and Croatia).
During the Conference 47 scientific and technical papers were presented (31 orally and 16 in poster section). It is a pleasant fact that, besides well known and recognized experts and scientists from the field of metal casting, the young scientists and researchers and PhD students from domestic and foreign universities, have also presented their papers at the Conference. Parallel with the lectures, the exhibition of foundry equipment, raw materials, program packages for simulation of pouring and solidification of castings, measuring and examination devices was held. 32 domestic and foreign companies related to the metal casting presented their products and sponsored this Conference, which unquestionably speaks about the interest of economy for this Conference. During the Conference the meeting of Foundry group of Chamber of Commerce of Republic of Croatia was held at which the current state of Croatian foundries and the state of global foundry production were presented. It was also considered the decrease of production, possible consequences and solutions. Relatively high number of persons and companies which participated in the work of the Conference shows that field and industry of metal casting understand that overcome of global crisis and realization of economical potential of foundries greatly depend of efficient use of human potential, knowledge, innovative solutions and their implementation in daily production. Also, in difficult times of recession, which directly hits the metal casting production, it is necessary to invest in knowledge and human potential as the pledge of fast and efficient recovery of this industrial branch.
