AFS Provides Casting Process

Information to ASM, Enters Into MOU

The American Foundry Society (AFS) and ASM International (ASM), Materials Park, Ohio, have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) regarding development of a new casting alloy material database for ASM. The MOU will allow ASM to use information from the AFS Casting Alloy Data Search (CADS ®) system, which AFS developed and is housed on the Metal Casting Design and Purchasing website at www.metalcastingdesign.com.

The purpose of the MOU is to discover and explore sharing and dissemination of casting alloy materials data and to provide students and practicing engineers, designers and material scientists with high quality data in a user friendly format. The database will be maintained and updated as new data is generated by AFS and its agents. The main purpose of this data is to assist the comparison and selection of casting alloys to aid in the design of engineered cast components for all casting materials and processes.

A database of materials properties data of casting alloys supplied by AFS will be published and maintained on the ASM website and made available to selected ASM members and/or subscribers to ASM online products.

“The approach being proposed is creating a win-win-win situation for AFS, ASM, and the designer and producer community,” said Tom Prucha, AFS vice president of technical services. “The information we are assisting ASM in disseminating will be of great value to those looking to manufacture cast components.”

Headquartered in Schaumburg, Illinois, AFS is a not-for-profit technical and management society that has existed since 1896 to provide and promote knowledge and services that strengthen the metalcasting industry for the ultimate benefit of its customers and society.
