BZ - Jaguar Land Rover to open manufacturing facility in Brazil

Reading time: min

Jaguar Land Rover will open a manufacturing facility in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The British carmaker, a subsidiary of Tata Motors, recently entered an agreement with the Rio de Janeiro state authorities to build a new plant with an initial annual production capacity of 24,000 cars.

JLR will be investing around £240 million (or Rs 2,400 crore) into this proposed facility by 2020. The construction of this building will start from mid-2014, while the first car is expected to roll out by 2016. For now, the cars built here will be for the Brazilian market only, but the factory is seen as JLR’s stepping stone into South America.

LR has been operating in Brazil for around 20 years and has 35 dealers, with plans of expansion in 2014. The Range Rover Evoque, Discovery and Freelander are some of the best-selling JLRs in Brazil.

Ralf Speth, CEO of Jaguar Land Rover, said, “Brazil and the surrounding regions are very important. Customers there have an increasing appetite for highly capable premium products. This new programme will enable us to bring exciting new vehicles to them, with outstanding British design and engineering, creating a world-class Jaguar Land Rover facility incorporating leading premium manufacturing technologies.

We have established excellent working relationships with the State of Rio de Janeiro, the City of Itatiaia and the Rio de Janeiro State Industrial Development Company and we look forward to attracting new customers to our business in this important market.”
