Canada - 260 to lose jobs at Magna plant

Reading time: min

NORTH SYDNEY — Workers at Precision Finished Components knew it was coming. On Tuesday, it did.

The Cape Breton division of Magna Powertrain — part of auto parts giant Magna International — gathered workers in the plant’s cafeteria at 3 p.m. Tuesday to let them know the facility will shut down by the end of 2009.

"Everyone was basically waiting for it," Steve Poirier said with calm resignation moments after learning that he is among 260 workers at the struggling auto parts plant who will be out of work within a year.

"We were just waiting to hear it officially. They never gave us a specific date," Mr. Poirier said, running his hand over his face.

The layoff of 17 people at the plant last month foreshadowed Tuesday’s announcement.
