Under the new corporate philosophy "Motion and Mobility", ZF presents on this year's International Motor Show in Frankfurt innovative technologies that essentially contribute to making automobiles today and in the future even more efficient, safer, and more dynamic. In focus are the worldwide first 9-speed automatic transmission (9HP) for front-transverse cars as well as the second, even more efficient generation of the globally successful 8-speed automatic transmission (8HP) including a plug-in hybrid version. With the ZF innovation prototype, the technology company combines its competences in the areas of electric drives and lightweight design.

To ensure individual mobility in the upcoming decades, conventional drives must become more economical, the electrification must be advanced, and the automobiles' weight as a whole must decrease. Even today, ZF offers modern products for each of these targets - and in parallel develops further innovative solutions for the future. All these will be presented by the technology company on about 860 square meters in hall 4.0, exhibition booth A07 at the 65th International Motor Show for Cars that will take place in Frankfurt from September 10 to 22, 2013.

Automatically efficient - new transmissions by ZF
With the 9HP, ZF puts the spotlight on the world's first 9-speed automatic transmission for passenger cars with front-transverse drive. Compared with today's commonplace 6-speed automatic transmissions with front-transverse installation, the compact ZF innovation reduces fuel consumption by up to 16 percent. Thanks to its modular design, the 9HP basic transmission also offers extension options on demand: thus, different starting elements as well as all-wheel drive applications can be implemented cost-efficiently. And the 9HP is the first transmission for which ZF also produces the complete control electronics in-house.

The second generation of the 8-speed automatic transmission (8HP) by ZF is again 3 percent more efficient. The optional start-stop function offers even more CO2 reduction potential. The optimized second generation of the 8HP is designed to provide effective support to carmakers in meeting the ever stricter statutory CO2 standards – and indeed cost-effectively in tandem with conventional or hybridized drives.

With the new generation of hybrid transmissions based on the 8-speed automatic transmission ZF is also presenting on the International Motor Show, the technology company is focusing on the plug-in functionality. Purely electric motoring was one key area of development. All hybrid components are integrated into the transmission in a space-saving way. Peak performance of the electric drive amounts to 80 kW enabling purely electric driving with up to 120 km/h.

E-mobility plus lightweight chassis design
The ZF innovation prototype is presented as a system exhibit on the International Motor Show. The ZF concept shows clearly the opportunities offered by combining e-mobility and lightweight design approaches. First of all, the innovation prototype is equipped with a high-torque e-drive module positioned centrally on the axle that offers a mechanical power output of 90 kW. For the innovation prototype, ZF has tailored lightweight construction in the chassis optimally to the specific requirements of electric drives. The weight reduction directly contributes to extending the e-vehicle's range or payload: On the front axle, a suspension strut and knuckle module made from fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP) provides damping and wheel guidance. Furthermore, a stabilizer link with hybrid construction is used there. An innovative semi-independent rear suspension does not only reduce the weight, but also increases customizable options. In case of the innovation prototype, it works in combination with fiber-reinforced stabilizers and lightweight dampers.
