On the heels of beginning export of its cars built in India, German automaker Volkswagen also plans to begin export of parts and components from the Chakan plant during this year.
Late last year the company began export of its sedan Vento as a completely built unit.
Responding to the query on export of components, a VW spokesperson said that “Volkswagen Group India is already successful in exporting cars to South Africa, Middle East and other Asian countries.”
He said that “We are also preparing to export parts and components from our Chakan plant during this year.” He declined to comment on the number of cars exported so far.
With an annual manufacturing capacity of 1,30,000 cars, the Pune plant is currently manufacturing VW Polo and Vento and Skoda Fabia and Rapid.
The spokesperson added that VW India’s cars are localized to a degree of 70%, with the engines and gear boxes still imported from overseas plants. The company has also developed vendors for supplying auto components, and currently has over 60 certified suppliers for the Group.
