Japan to help Vietnam strengthen car, electronic parts industries

Japan will help Viet Nam develop auto and electronics parts manufacturing, a senior official from the Japan External Trade Organization said.

Takezo Yanagida, Jetro executive vice president, said that Japanese assistance would focus on technical aspects like training to improve executives’ skills.

The auto and electronics industries are weak in Vietnam since support industries are not well developed, he said.

For instance, auto makers need around 400,000 parts but they can source only 2,000 to 3,000 from local suppliers, he said.

Japan would boost support to Viet Nam next year after the two countries sign an Economic Partnership Agreement next month during a visit by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung to Japan.

“The support will benefit both Vietnamese and Japanese businesses,” Yanagida told Thanh Nien Daily Thursday on the sidelines of an ancillary-industries exhibition organized in Ho Chi Minh City by Jetro and the city’s Investment and Trade Promotion Center.

The two-day exhibition features products and services from mechanical and precision engineering, electrical and electronic, molding, plating, pressing and die-casting, rubber, metal, and plastic industries.
