KUKA wins major order from Daimler

Customer opts for KUKA Systems' innovative application of adhesives and sealants

Reading time: min

In the second quarter, KUKA Systems has received orders from Daimler AG for

• automated systems components for the application of adhesives to automotive
(Hohlraumkonservierung an Automobilen (HRK)) and

• innovative automation application of sealants in the automotive sector (Spritzbare Akustikdämmmasse (SAM)).

KUKA Systems unveiled the technology to the public only recently and has now already received the first major order.

Both technologies were developed in-house by KUKA and feature an impressive degree of environmental and workplace friendliness. Dr. Till Reuter, CEO of KUKA AG, commends the developments. "These orders from Daimler AG, a key KUKA customer, encourage us to continuously press ahead with innovations and new technologies."

SAM – Spritzbare Akustikdämmmasse (injectable acoustic insulating compound)

Whereas to date, bitumen or butyl mats had to be custom cut to size for various areas of the car body and positioned by hand, the application process on the systems developed by KUKA is so flexibly automated that both different vehicle types and model series can be handled on the same line. For this project, four automated stations consisting of three robots each mounted on a KUKA Systems linear unit are used to apply the acoustic insulating compound to the car body.

In addition, the robots, which will be delivered with the new KR C4 controllers, will manipulate the car body parts (e.g., open doors and/or tailgates). The applied acrylate, which replaces the bitumen mats used to date, is waterbased and is not only a new environmentally friendly technology, but also lighter and easier to handle.

HRK – Hohlraumkonservierung (corrosion protection)

This process consists of point-by-point and sequential wax application. Using both processes makes it possible to cover a larger area in less time than was previously the case. The in-line cleaning that takes place during the process is a first, and is a resource conserving and environmentally friendly cleaning and maintenance method.
