RUS - Report – Daimler mulls Russian production facility

According to unnamed local government officials, the Interfax news agency has reported that Germany’s Daimler car and truck maker is seeking to establish a new plant in the Russian city of St. Petersburg.

The Interfax report says that already the St. Petersburg Vice-Governor Mikhail Mokretsov established a municipal investment committee that would deal with Daimler and the local municipality has also proposed to the investor a possible site in the Russian city’s southern belt. Asked about the reported decision, a Daimler spokesperson said “there are no decisions at this point about the start of local production of Mercedes-Benz passenger cars in Russia.” Without further elaborating on the matter, the person did say the company is constantly monitoring all prospective markets, including Russia, in the idea of maybe setting up potential local production facilities.

Interfax further said that Russian Industry and Trade Minister Denis Manturov claims Daimler to be already involved in negotiations with officials in Moscow about producing passenger-cars in a new local production facility. The German company already has a manufacturing presence in Russia, as it partnered with Russia’s Kamaz to build trucks and with GAZ to make vans.
