UK steel production bounces back in January

Reading time: min

AP reported that steel production in the UK bounced back in January 2011 from the previous month as UK manufacturing continued to respond to increased demand.

UK Steel, a division of the Engineering Employers Federation, said that production was more than a third higher in January 2011 than December 2010 at over 200,000 tonnes. The Yorkshire and Humber area saw a production increase of 50% while Wales saw a rise of around a fifth.

Mr Ian Rodgers director of UK Steel said that "The uplift in January 2011 output was heartening and is a reflection of the continuing improvement in UK manufacturing output generally. Nevertheless, we still have a long way to go to achieve pre recession levels of steel output, with demand from the construction sector in particular remaining very weak."
