Reading time: min

Aerocast Inc., Mesa, Ariz., announced it has been awarded two aluminum casting programs for parts to be used on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner accessory gearbox.

The gearbox, provided by Hamilton Sundstrand, is part of the Rolls Royce Trent 1000 engine assembly. Aerocast will produce the components at its sand casting facility, where it maintains aluminum and magnesium capabilities.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is the world's first jet airliner built using composite materials for most of its construction. It is expected to save approximately 20% on fuel costs. Fifty-seven customers have ordered a total of 866 Boeing 787 Dreamliners since the program was launched in 2004. Boeing estimates it will build about 3,310 of the aircraft through 2028.

Hamilton Sundstrand manufactures aerospace systems for commercial, regional, corporate and military aircraft, and it is a major supplier for international space programs. Additional Aerocast customers include Honeywell Aerospace, Sikorsky Aircraft and Shimadzu Precision Instruments. Aerocast said in a press release it is experiencing high demand for its products.
