India - 2 men fall to death at Ennore foundry

CHENNAI: Two contract labourers engaged in replacing asbestos sheets on the roof of a shed at the Ennore foundry - a company of the Hinduja Group - fell to their death from a height of 30 feet on Wednesday when one of the sheets caved in.

According to police, the Ennore foundry had engaged Baskar Enterprises to replace worn-out asbestos sheets on its premises. Baskar Enterprises in turn hired some men as daily labourers for the job at the foundry.

On Wednesday, Ramesh, Chockalingam and Sekar were told to replace the asbestos sheets on the roof. They asked Sekar to bring some tools for unscrewing the nuts on the worn-out sheets, climbed on to the roof and began walking to the other end.

Tuesday night's rain had made the roof slippery and they found it difficult to balance. Soon, the sheet caved in and they fell down.

They were rushed to the Stanley Government General Hospital where they were declared ‘brought dead'.

Ennore police have registered a case under negligence act. "We will include the persons responsible for the negligence in maintaining the safety precautions for the workers, while climbing up on the roof," P Raman, inspector of police, Ennore told.
