Talks to end Finnish metal strike to begin

Representatives of the Finnish Technology Industries and the Union of Salaried Employees (TU) are to meet Juhani Salonius, the national conciliator, on Thursday afternoon.

Some 3,000 managerial and clerical workers in the Finnish metal industry went on strike on Monday. Strike broke over disagreements about the amount and form of pay rises.

The affected companies are shipbuilder Aker Yards, steelmakers Outokumpu, Ovako and Rautaruukki, engineering group Wärtsilä, miner and smelter Boliden and Luvata, formerly known as Outokumpu Copper Products.

The strike is set to expand on Wednesday next week to another 40 companies and 4,000 employees. The second phase would affect, among others, mobile phone maker Nokia, lift and escalator maker Kone and engineering groups Metso and Asea Brown Boveri.
