Mining Academy Establishes Center of Excellence in Chile

In the Chilean capital of Santiago, the headmaster of the Technical University of Freiberg, Professor Bernd Meyer signed a letter of intent on October 1st with counterparts from Chile and Germany, for the establishment of a mining center. With the planned construction in northern Chile, research and education in the mining industry will be improved. The German Federal Minister of Education and Research, Professor Annette Schavan, and the Chilean mining minister, Prof Herman de Solminihac welcomed the project.
 
"The mining industry is of great importance for Chile," said the headmaster of the Technical University of Freiberg, Professor Bernd Meyer. "A sustainable use of mineral resources represents a great a challenge, as well as satisfying the increasing demand for skilled professionals in this area. As a resource university, we have a duty to extensively educate mining students and internationally so that the natural resources can be used as effectively as possible, safe and environmentally friendly. With planned center for mining, teaching and research, we fulfil this demand. "
