It is reported that the traditional German seaport city of Emden is in a state of shock as its North Sea Dockyards closed a day after owners ThyssenKrupp sold it to wind farm maker Siag Schaaf Industrie. As per report, hundreds of people gathered at the shipyard to protest, while local farmers showed solidarity with the shipbuilders by forming a tractor convey.
Mr Karl Heinz Benner from the shipyards working council said that "My colleagues have been told that there will be no more shipbuilding here. They all have strong connections to the industry and the yard and this has hit then hard."
It may be noted that ThyssenKrupp announced plans to close the yard on September 9th 2009 and has faced down union protests and state outrage.
