Canada - Seeking help for Cape Breton auto workers

Lesedauer: min

The member of Parliament for a Cape Breton riding is calling on the federal government to help the auto industry in his economically depressed region.

Mark Eyking, MP for Sydney-Victoria, says he met with John Morgan, the mayor of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality, and other councillors to discuss the situation.

He and Morgan say they need assurances that workers affected by the downturn, like those at an Atlantic <link _top>Castings Ltd. plant, can be helped with training.

And they say Ottawa should provide a stimulus package to the industry.

Eyking says he will raise the issue during an emergency debate on the auto industry in the House of Commons on Monday.

Atlantic <link _top>Castings is shutting down indefinitely over the holidays, putting about 55 people out of work.
