GF Automotive wins IMA Award for Lightweight-Design

Reading time: min

GF Automotive wins first place at the annual Design-Awards of International Magnesium Association (IMA) with the category „Casting Design“. The winning casting part is a roof top that is produced for the convertible Opel Cascada at GF Automotive’s location in Altenmarkt, Austria.

The International Magnesium Association (IMA) with its headquarters in Wauconda, Illinois, USA assigns the lightweight-award already for the eighth time. GF Automotive impressed with the design of the roof top of the Opel convertible. The award was assigned on the 21st May during the annual International Magnesium Conference, held this year in China’s Xi’An.

With wall thicknesses from 1.2 to 2.5mm, the lightweight magnesium die-cast component was able to convince the jury.

The soft top coated with folding fabric is building the central completion of the windshield:

On the roof top the servomotors as well as various fastening and covering equipment are installed, therefore it is exposed to high weights.

Another advantage of the component: All 37 functional relevant bores, numerous openings and fixing points are only stamped and therefore no further mechanical processing is necessary.

The possibilities to adapt the wall thickness to particular requirements as well as complex geometries without processing lead in the use of magnesium as it is currently the lightest material in large series and also lead to significant cost and weight reductions.
