Fostering technology leadership is a cornerstone of Georg Fischer's strategy. In 2012, the company invested CHF 100 million in research & development and more than 40 new patents were registered. At the 4th Georg Fischer Technology Day, which took place in Schaffhausen on 16 October 2013, its three divisions presented a whole array of innovative solutions addressing upcoming trends and challenges.
GF Piping Systems offers its customers safe and secure water conveyance systems. Water contamination issues are a major challenge in large buildings such as hotels, hospitals and schools. The division presented this year new high performance plastic water systems, free of dead space and featuring an innovative disinfection technology to prevent potential health risks caused by legionella.
GF Automotive provides iron, aluminum and magnesium cast components, dedicated to the lightweight design of cars and trucks. GF Automotive showed an innovative structural component for car bodies (strut dome) replacing the previous assembly of ten different parts welded together. The resulting 50% weight reduction leads to significantly lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
The partner of choice for high value parts production in market segments such as Aerospace and Aeronautics is GF Machining Solutions. At the 4th Technology Day, GF AgieCharmilles presented itself for the first time under the new name GF Machining Solutions in line with the corporation's new brand architecture. The division presented, as a world premiere, a novel way of mmachining key components of aircraft engines with electro-erosion machines to substitute the expensive broaching process.
CEO Yves Serra concluded the day by saying: "Our innovations focus primarily on addressing our customers' needs in those market segments where we can contribute the most. New products and services development involve more than m600 specialized engineers in a dozen R&D departments worldwide acting mclose to and in cooperation with our customers and leading academic minstitutions."
