Speira Recycling Services in Töging has been doing pioneering work in magnesium recycling for two decades. With a CO₂ footprint of less than 0.6 kilograms per kilogram of recycled metal, the company offers an environmentally friendly alternative to primary production, which often generates over 20 kilograms of CO₂ per kilogram and mainly comes from China. Magnesium is a metal that is even lighter than aluminum.
"On July 1, 2005, we started as one of the few magnesium recyclers in Germany. In the Speira Group, to which we have belonged since 2023, we are the only one," explains Marcus Heimerl, Plant Manager in Töging. The integration into the Speira Group has strengthened the plant. “Our aim is to close not just one, but all cycles - the big ones and the small ones,” Heimerl continues. One example of this is the aluminum can production in Neuss, which uses the recycled magnesium from Töging as an alloying metal.
Up to 4,500 tons of magnesium per year
The plant processes up to 4,500 tons of magnesium every year - in addition to the main material, aluminium. The plant works in shifts with five to six full-time employees seven days a week. “60 to 65 percent of our core business is the reworking of material from an automotive foundry, mainly process recoveries from their castings,” explains Heimerl.
The plant also recycles class 1 and 2 scrap batches, some of which are shredded and slightly contaminated. An in-house shredder enables the pre-treatment of larger scrap parts for melting down.
