UK - Federal Mogul employees laid off

Reading time: min

Federal Mogul employees are taking an extended Christmas break as the looming recession bites.
The 145 workers at the Lydney-based camshaft <link _top>castings manufacturers are hoping to stave off the threat of redundancy by taking an extended holiday over the Christmas period - believed to be four weeks.

The plant has seen a downturn in business in recent months due to a drop in the number of cars being manufactured. In a statement the company confirmed the move saying:

“In response to a downturn in demand for December, Federal Mogul’s operation in Lydney has been in consultation with workforce representatives.

"During discussions all parties have agreed to a lay-off programme that will extend the Christmas holiday period to reflect the current market conditions.”

Even with the deal in place the future of workers at the plant remains uncertain.

A Federal Mogul employee who did not wish to be named said: “We have been told we still have work for the next two weeks but after that I don’t know exactly what’s happening.”
