UK - Hundreds of new jobs to be created with new car plant

Reading time: min

A NEW car parts foundry in Kidderminster will create up to 500 jobs – five times more than originally announced.

In August, Indian company Amtek Auto announced it was to open a new plant in the town, with an initial investment of £5million resulting in 100 jobs.

But, as part of a week-long visit of India, Business Secretary Vince Cable announced that Amtek’s commitment to the new operation will see the firm invest £23million and create 500 jobs by 2018.

The new plant, to complement Amtek’s existing facilities in Coventry and Essex, will be based on the former Lawrence’s Recycling site on the A451 between Kidderminster and Stourport.

o convince the company that Kidderminster was the right place to invest, Wyre Forest District Council and Worcestershire County Council worked in partnership to offer a significant incentive package to secure the investment into Wyre Forest and Worcestershire.

Mark Garnier, MP for Wyre Forest, said: “I’m delighted. If Vince Cable is right and this is the scale of Amtek’s investment, then it is a massive opportunity for the district.

“As well as creating 500 jobs, there will be many other businesses in the supply chain and those providing services for Amtek that will also benefit.”

Councillor John Campion, Cabinet Member for Planning and Economic Regeneration said: “This is a great example of local authorities and the LEP working with a global organisation to bring work class high tech forging to Kidderminster.

“The area has a lot to offer international companies and we welcome Amtek to the district and look forward to a long and fruitful relationship with them.”

Vince Cable said: “Britain and India have long enjoyed a strong, collaborative business relationship.

“So I am pleased that Amtek is the latest Indian company to increase investment into the UK, creating 500 new jobs in Kidderminster.”

No-one from Amtek was available for comment on Mr Cable’s announcement but, earlier this year, the company’s chief operating officer Laurence Hurley described Kidderminster as an “ideal fit” for the new plant.

He said: “We were extremely impressed with the pro-business attitude of the two Councils and in a short space of time they were able to offer a substantial package of support that convinced the Amtek supervisory Board that the Kidderminster site was the right place to invest.”
