WATERLOO (KWWL) - North America's largest 3-D printer now calls Waterloo its home.
A crane hoisted the 12,000-pound machine into the third floor of the Cedar Valley Techworks Building on Thursday.
Representatives with the University of Northern Iowa Metal Casting Center received the printer. They expect it to be up and running by the end of October.
The printer produces three-dimensional molds for metal casting, which is widely used in advanced manufacturing. It has the capability of making a solid part with a volume of over 13 cubic feet.
The Iowa Economic Development Authority, through the Greater Cedar Valley Alliance, is funding the project. Their hope is to see a strengthened industrial base in Iowa.
The advanced manufacturing technology that the printer offers will become available to companies who wish to utilize its rapid casting capabilities.
UNI plans to use the device for research and work with regional businesses to develop the technology.
