Five-star award for Pierburg plant in Spain

Reading time: min

The Pierburg subsidiary, Pierburg S.A., Abadiano, Spain, has been awarded five stars by the European Federation of Quality Management as part of the latter's EFQM Excellence Model Awards.

It was as early as 2003 that the Spanish plant voluntarily applied for EFQM certification and last year a detailed report was submitted on improvement processes carried out over the past years. The prize was awarded after a committee of nine experts evaluated the company on this basis.

The EFQM award goes to companies having achieved outstanding optimization of their processes through self-analyses and critical internal reviews. Among the awardees to date are Robert Bosch GmbH with its Feuerbach plant near Stuttgart and the BMW plant in Berlin.

Each year the EFQM award goes to ten different European companies from a variety of business sectors. "We're very proud of the prize and the number of stars, given to only a few companies until now," says Javier Egurrola, General Manager of Pierburg S.A. The number of stars reflects the degree to which the company succeeds in enacting the steps recommended by EFQM.

The EFQM, an organization established by the European Commission in 1988, provides guidelines for setting up and further developing comprehensive management systems. These guidelines can be used by companies in order to ascertain improvement potentials and increase business success in the long term. The EFQM was founded by 14 European companies including Philips, Renault, and Nestlé. Today it has around 470 member companies and organizations in 55 countries and 50 sectors of business.

Pierburg S.A., located in Spain's Basque Country, has a workforce of almost 300. The subsidiary ranks as a lead plant for EGR valves of which it makes almost five million annually.
