Reading time: min

NCI Building Systems Inc reopened the former Material Sciences Corp steel processing plant in Middletown and will initially employ about 70 people.

NCI bought the facility June 2010 for USD 4.9 million. It has since been substantially revamped and modernized to become state of the art the company said in a press release.

The opening represents the extension of NCI’s coil coating operations into the upper Midwest and Northeast.

The plant can coat a variety of gauges and widths of metal for numerous applications. With the Middletown plant NCI’s coil coating segment now operates 4 light gauge, coil coating facilities and 38 manufacturing plants overall across the country.

NCI received about USD 200,000 in Ohio tax credits to reopen the 170,000 square foot plant. The estimated USD 13 million project was expected at the time to create 74 jobs, according to the Ohio Department of Development.

Material Sciences shuttered the plant in 2004 eliminating 87 jobs.
