Global Production and R&D:

R&D and Innovation Centers: consists of expert foundry metallurgists and researchers focused on Product Development and R&D, Technical Market Support, and Plant Support. The EFT team is based at Elkem’s Research and Development Centre in Kristiansand, Norway, one of the best-equipped metallurgical centers in the industry. The facility includes advanced metallurgical and chemical labs, featuring an optical microscope with automatic image analysis, a scanning electron microscope with EDX, and chemical analysis equipment such as X-Ray Fluorescence, Atomic Absorption Spectrometry, ICP, and Leco. For product development, the center operates induction furnaces with capacities ranging from 30 to 1200 kg of cast iron, a sand mixer for molding sand production, and various patterns for trial molds. The tundish cover process, supporting ductile iron treatment up to 300 kg, is also utilized.

In addition to R&D, and product development the Elkem Foundry Technology team emphasizes technical documentation, training, and support for Elkem’s sales and production teams. With facilities on three continents, Elkem Foundry Products delivers top-quality nodularisers and inoculants, ensuring flexible, localized solutions tailored to diverse casting conditions.

Quality and Safety Standards: With the adoption of the UN’s Globally Harmonized System (GHS) for chemical classification and labeling, Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are now referred to as Safety Data Sheets (SDS). However, per REACH Article 31(1), SDS is only required for products classified as hazardous. Since Elkem Foundry products do not contain any classified hazardous substances, an SDS is not legally necessary.

To meet customer requests for health and safety details, Elkem voluntarily provides Product Safety Information (PSI) for its products. PSI includes the same essential safety information as an SDS, though it is not governed by REACH or CLP regulations. Most MSDS documents have therefore been replaced by PSI. For more information, refer to the UK REACH Competent Authority Information Leaflet Number 13.

Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG):

Elkem prioritizes sustainability, integrating ESG principles into every phase of production, from resource extraction to final product delivery.

  • Key Certifications: Elkem is ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certified, ensuring adherence to stringent environmental and occupational health standards.
  • Annual Sustainability Report: Learn more about our ESG practices and achievements in our annual report.
