Germany’s Environmental Minister Norbert Röttgen and Economics Minister Rainer Brüderle have jointly become patrons of the world’s leading trade fair in the wind energy industry, the HUSUM WindEnergy. “This is good news for Germany as a wind energy and business location. It shows how important wind energy is for the government in terms of energy generation, but also for the country’s competitive strength in international markets,” said Hanno Fecke, Managing Director of Messe Husum, on the Global Wind Day to the first ever joint involvement of the two ministries in the HUSUM WindEnergy.

The 2010 HUSUM WindEnergy will be held for the twelfth time (since 1989) from 21 – 25 September. Over 800 exhibitors from around 70 nations are expected to present their products and services to more than 30,000 visitors on grounds spanning 43.000m2. “As in previous years, we again expect to see business deals and project initiations in the billions at this year’s trade fair,” Fecke said expressing his expectations of the five-day event. “This, of course, is due in part to the increasing importance of offshore wind farms, which require enormous investments.”

Technology and innovation in the wind energy industry and the HUSUM WindEnergy are synonymous. Many companies habitually use the HUSUM WindEnergy to present new products and services. “They know that the concentration of international experts here in Husum will again be as high this year from 21 – 25 September as hardly anywhere else,” Fecke said.

It was very interesting to see how the exhibitor structure had changed over the years, Fecke added, mentioning German energy suppliers as an example. “Whereas five years ago, none of the “big four” were here as exhibitors, only one of their smaller subsidiaries, if that, they each take up quite a big space today.”

This year’s key topics are expected to include “ongoing issues such as network problems, offshore and repowering, but also such points as improvement of quality standards, optimisation of supply chains or patent-related matters.” Then, of course, there is the issue of jobs and workforce, still required in great number in the industry. “Particularly with regard to older service technicians, the sector is currently grappling with the question of how to deal with individuals who due to the work load can no longer, or only with great difficulty, climb up a windmill. A challenging issue for a sector that contributes to environmental protection and could set further standards in how to deal with staff,” Fecke states.

The HUSUM WindEnergy is supported by a number of national and international associations, including the BWE, the GWEC and the VDMA. Other associations such as the WWEA, the AWEA and the BWEA are regularly found among the exhibitors or as co-organisers of the accompanying congress. The trade fair is hosted in cooperation with Hamburg Messe and Congress GmbH.
