Norican Group submits science-based emission reduction targets for independent validation

Follows year-long process after signing up to SBTi

Norican Group, home to DISA, ItalPresseGauss, Simpson, StrikoWestofen and Wheelabrator, has this week submitted its emission reduction targets for validation by the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

The submission follows an intensive process of mapping, analysing and evaluating the group’s direct and indirect emissions, and establishing a baseline to track progress against.

The headline target, which is now pending audit and validation by SBTi is:

To reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by more than 50% by 2032 from a 2021 base year.

Norican chose to develop its targets in line with the more ambitious goal of the Paris Agreement to keep global warming under 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Beyond its direct emissions, Norican also commits to engaging its supply chain and customers in setting emission reduction targets – aiming to encourage 25% of its suppliers by spend and 70% of its customers by revenue to commit to science-based targets by 2027*.

Anders Wilhjelm, CEO of Norican Group, comments: “This week’s COP27 summit has made it clear that we have very nearly run out of time to take action. As a globally operating business with influence on some of the biggest emitting industries, it’s simply our duty to act and to act fast.

“The journey we embarked on almost a year ago, when we signed up, has already kickstarted a transformation in our business that I’m really proud of – across the whole workforce, in all our regions. And we will need all hands on deck. The targets we’ve set stretch us and will involve a huge effort and commitment. It’ll be worth it. But to succeed and stay below 1.5 degrees, we will need to convince everybody we know, everybody we work with and buy from. That process has already started.”
