Robots as cast cleaners: KUKA's cell4_premachining brings more flexibility to the foundry

Extremely economical and powerful: In the field of deburring technology, the cell4_premachining production cell adapts to every customer requirement.

Reading time: min

The KUKA cell4_premachining brings the advantages of large-scale industry to foundries of all sizes. The cell can be customized and is extremely economical. Robots, positioners and motor spindles work perfectly together and reduce the hard physical work of deburring, sawing, milling or grinding. This not only saves time, but also gives foundries more flexibility thanks to the 13-fold tool changer.

One production cell, many options: KUKA cell4_premachining is made for the foundry industry and processes components weighing up to 600 kilograms. It does not matter whether it is aluminum, gray cast iron or steel. As a deburring, milling or grinding cell, cell4_premachining is extremely flexible. It also proves this with its forklift-compatible base frame: it can be quickly moved in the workshop and integrated into existing productions.

Intelligent deburring solutions
"The KUKA cell4_premachining can reduce cycle times by up to 50 percent and save up to 75 percent on tool costs," says Steffen Jacobi, Product Manager at KUKA. “Because with a changer, the cell exchanges and uses different tools fully automatically.” Up to 13 tools can deburr, drill, grind fire cracks or cut off feeders in just one setting. The advantage: minimal transport routes, maximum flexibility. Additional processing stations are not required.
The tool management is monitored several times for safety and sensors, so that there are no hazards for man or machine. The robot also notices when the tool becomes blunt: by detecting the changes in speed, the KUKA KR QUANTEC nano can adjust the feed speed. If necessary, it can be sanded down to the last abrasive grain.

Central clamping unit and simple programming make work easier
The robot cleans different components in a minimal set-up time. This is where intelligence meets power: the KR QUANTEC nano scores with its rigid kinematics and also measures vibrations. Before the system moves into a critical area for the tool, the robot counteracts it. Another advantage is the central clamping unit. The KUKA 3-axis positioner optimally aligns the components with the machining tool - without annoying clamping arms or clamps that hinder the robot.
Steffen Jacobi sees further advantages for foundries in the simple programming: “The wireless control package KUKA.Handguiding with ready2_pilot makes it easy to learn and control robots. Even inexperienced people can get started in a few minutes without programming knowledge and teach simple paths. "

In combination with the KUKA.Sim simulation software, companies benefit from an all-round carefree package that offers planning security and efficiency - and relieves employees as much as possible.
