Achieving the climate targets and energy transition are major challenges for energy-intensive industries. Energy-intensive industries are responsible for over 20% of total greenhouse gas emissions in the EU. However, defossilization in energy-intensive industries is particularly challenging compared to many other sectors due to plant diversity, investment and energy costs, and plant lifetimes. To achieve the goals of the European Green Deal, energy-intensive industries must transform to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions while remaining competitive. Green thermoprocessing plays a key role in this.

The ecoMetals Forum "Green thermoprocess technology" will focus on three aspects. First the energy policy framework conditions for thermoprocess technology in changing energy markets will be presented, the challenges arising from this and the role of thermoprocess technology. Research and development and innovative strength are crucial for the transformation of the industry. In this context, in the second part the current research activities of the Joint research for sustainable industrial furnace and thermoprocess technology, Applied energy research and the Cluster Decarbonization in Industries (CDI) will be presented.

At this the importance of these programs and networks for the implementation of innovative projects is highlighted. Specific examples of defossilization of energy-intensive processes with electric heating using green electricity and hydrogen combustion in thermoprocessing plants will be presented. The focus will be on both the current and future potential of industrial furnace construction. It also discusses how renewable energy can be used in energy-intensive industries using green thermoprocessing technology

In this context, it is important to break new ground and to actively help shape the structural change that is necessary in terms of energy and climate policy by networking the various activities. The Thermprocess trade fair in Düsseldorf offers an excellent forum for this, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises. 12 June 2023, Messe Düsseldorf, Halle9 D74
