150 years of Wöhr AAGM Aalener Gießereimaschinen GmbH, an exciting and successful company history with many facets

Let us always treat the foundry sand well

Reading time: min

IN May 2021 it will be exactly 150 years that the Eisenwerk Gebrüder Wöhr company was founded in Stuttgart as a locksmith's shop.

The young company benefited from the diverse business opportunities in the newly founded German Empire in 1871 and over the years soon became the largest steel manufacturer in southern Germany.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the company moved to Aalen Unterkochen due to space requirements. At that time, Wöhr was a renowned address in steel construction, as evidenced by numerous high-rise buildings in the rapidly growing cities, such as the Hindenburg building, Zeppelin building or Breuninger building in Stuttgart and numerous railway projects and stations. Technically, Wöhr was already ahead of its time, as the first steel house was built as a model house on the factory premises in Unterkochen, before the world-famous steel house in Weimar / Dessau, which is assigned to the BAUHAUS.

As a result, the focus on mechanical engineering for conveyor and crane systems was expanded and, after 1945, the focus was placed on machine technology for foundries and paper factories, as well as package and sorting systems for Deutsche Post. In foundry technology, the focus is clearly on the subjects of "liquid iron" and "sand" with numerous patents.

Since 2004 AAGM Aalener Gießereimaschinen GmbH

Dipl. Kfm. Ing. Josef Preiß, who had been a consultant for the Wöhr company since 1989, takes over with the young engineers Peter Wagner and Dipl.Ing. Mechanical engineering BA Stephan Borst the name Wöhr in the AAGM.

With the dynamic trio, a complete realignment of the company structure is developing efficiently and with a division of labor, which is still successful today.

AAGM is valued as a reliable supplier of continuous whirl mixers for cold-resin-bonded molding sands, reclamation with sand transport and logistics, coating preparation and molding plants for chemically bound sands by well-known companies throughout Europe.

With Wöhr CZ s.r.o. In 2005, a sister company in Brno / Czech Republic started its activity in order to be successful in Eastern Europe and to describe the important customer proximity.

Wöhr PL sp.o.o in Oswiece / Poland and Wöhr Makine Mühendislik Ticaret in Izmir / Turkey have also been working as service and sales companies since 2018.

Due to the good structure and warehouse logistics, Wöhr can deliver practically every wear spare part within 24 hours within Europe, if necessary.

So much for the present of an established mechanical engineering company and what are the prospects for the future?

Josef Preiß describes the situation of the medium-sized mechanical engineering company not only in the foundry industry, but also in our social demands and demands on modern production.

It is about digitization, circular economy, ecology and with sand about reclamation:

“Let's treat the grain of sand properly for a good casting”, this is how the passionate Josef Preiß conjures his colleagues.

The new tasks and challenges lie where there are unsolved problems and in the 21st century the answers will be found in the fair and economical handling of raw materials and the environment.

With the grain of sand, at the center of the action for many foundries, Wöhr AAGM is entering the 151st year of existence with the task of finding intelligent solutions in basic research. Together with renowned scientists and commissioned institutes, the search for the best available technology applies.

This applies to sophisticated mechanical engineering and especially to sand reclamation and environmentally friendly reuse in all conceivable forms. Sand reclamation, disposal, diversity of chemical additives, deviations in additively manufactured sand, simulation and automatic quality controls.

Whenever it comes to sand, the engineers and employees at Wöhr AAGM are recognized partners.

150 years of Wöhr, that is an exciting and eventful journey through time through industrial development and seamlessly transitions into changing questions of the present and the future.

Glückauf Wöhr AAGM - Happy 150th anniversary!
