In so doing, both the aluminium smelter and the foundry meet the globally applicable requirements for ecologically and socially sustainable production and responsible corporate governance in the aluminium industry. The certification covers the development, production and distribution of primary and recycled aluminium in cast and liquid form. The extensive tests required for this were carried out by TÜV Nord Cert GmbH.

“With the certification of our production sites in Essen, we are systematically pursuing our sustainability strategy,” says Philipp Schlüter, Chairman of the Executive Board of TRIMET Aluminium SE. “As a domestic aluminium producer, we ensure the industry is supplied with an important material. With sustainably manufactured products, we contribute to attaining global climate protection targets while simultaneously strengthening the competitiveness of our production sites.”

TRIMET is currently pursuing the goal of producing aluminium in a climate-neutral manner by 2045. The family-owned company continuously invests in the modernization of its production facilities and the development of new technologies. In addition to the production sites in Essen, the recycling plant in Gelsenkirchen, the aluminium smelter in Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne and the foundry in Castelsarrasin have already been certified in accordance with the ASI Performance Standard. Certification of the remaining production sites is currently in preparation.

The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative is a global, non-profit organization that promotes responsible production, sourcing and processing of aluminium throughout the value chain. The key sustainability issues include climate change, the recycling economy, nature conservation and human rights. Its more than 270 members include aluminium producers and processors throughout the aluminium value chain, as well as leading civil society organizations.

The ASI certification program is the only comprehensive voluntary initiative for sustainability standards in the aluminium value chain. The ASI Performance Standard defines environmental, social and governance principles. It contains 59 environmental, social and governance criteria covering biodiversity, workers’ rights and greenhouse gas emissions, among other factors.
