VDI statement on job cuts in industry

Germany is currently undergoing profound changes, which are reflected, among other things, in job cuts in German industry, particularly in the automotive sector. VDI Director Adrian Willig says: “As the VDI, we are naturally concerned to see job losses in traditional industries.” These changes are primarily the result of four megatrends: digital transformation, demographic change, decarbonization, and deglobalization.

Despite this development in traditional industries, there is also a growing demand for highly qualified engineers in future-oriented industries.

VDI labor market expert Ingo Rauhut says: "The current development is bringing with it uncertainties and structural shifts. Although there is currently a slight easing of the skills shortage, we believe that demand for engineers will soon rise sharply again in view of the baby boomer generation soon to retire and the necessary public investment in infrastructure, security, and climate. This is shown by the surveys in the latest VDI-IW Engineering Monitor."

This makes it all the more important to seize the opportunity inherent in the current situation, adds VDI Director Willig: "People in engineering professions and technical specialists must be qualified for new, promising technologies through targeted reskilling programs. Demographic change will further exacerbate the shortage of skilled workers in the engineering professions. Targeted investments in education and training are necessary to secure Germany's innovative strength and competitiveness as an engineering location. We at VDI support engineers in this endeavor, for example, through our continuing education programs."

With the Initiative Future Germany 2050, VDI aims to show ways in which our country can remain a strong technology location in international competition in the future. As part of the VDI initiative, experts from various industries recently collaborated to develop the VDI impulse paper “Impulses for Education and Qualification of the Future.” It is aimed at all education stakeholders and presents 28 examples of good practice along the entire education chain, from daycare to continuing education, in order to make STEM education fit for the future.
